Anne Marie Dowling

In recognition of her enduring commitment to dance, community, and lifelong learning.

Adult Ballet Centre is proud to recognise Anne Marie Dowling as our Patron.

Anne Marie’s story is one of courage, generosity, and a lifelong love of dance.

As a young girl growing up in Brighton, Anne Marie attended ballet classes and performed in productions including The Sleeping Beauty and Le Sylphides. Although family circumstances prevented her from continuing her training, her love of ballet never left her.

Many decades later, at the age of 74, Anne Marie made the decision to return to ballet. Inspired by a local dance program and determined to reconnect with a childhood passion, she stepped back into the studio and rediscovered the joy of movement, music, and artistic expression. Her story was later featured in a newspaper article celebrating older Australians embracing dance and lifelong learning.

Eight years ago, Anne Marie joined Adult Ballet Centre and quickly became much more than a student. She became part of the heart of our community.

From her earliest classes, Anne Marie embraced everything that Adult Ballet Centre stands for. She formed lasting friendships, welcomed new dancers with warmth and encouragement, and demonstrated that ballet can enrich our lives at every age.

When Adult Ballet Centre held its very first community Christmas celebration, Anne Marie generously opened her home and hosted the gathering, helping to create the spirit of belonging that continues to shape our culture today. That generosity and connection remain among her most defining qualities.

Throughout her time at ABC, Anne Marie has embraced performance opportunities that many people might never imagine possible later in life. One of her earliest and most memorable milestones was appearing on stage in Giselle, a moment that reflected her courage, commitment, and willingness to step beyond her comfort zone.

Since then, she has continued to take part in performances and community events, always bringing enthusiasm, grace, and joy to the experience.

Today, Anne Marie continues to attend classes regularly, often dancing twice each week and frequently visiting a third class simply to observe, connect with fellow dancers, and say hello. Her presence is a familiar and treasured part of studio life.

Most recently, Anne Marie appeared in Adult Ballet Centre’s 2026 Performance Season, Reflections, performing in both shows at the Shirley Burke Theatre. In a beautiful cameo role, she appeared wearing an ethereal silver crown and a flowing gown adorned with delicate gold and silver detailing, creating a memorable stage image that reflected both elegance and wisdom. Her performance was a reminder that artistry knows no age, and that the stage belongs to anyone willing to continue the journey.

The title of Patron is awarded to Anne Marie in recognition of her extraordinary loyalty, unwavering support of the Adult Ballet Centre community, and enduring belief that ballet is for everyone.

She reminds us daily that dance is not measured by age, but by curiosity, courage, friendship, and a willingness to keep learning.

Anne Marie’s story continues to inspire dancers of all generations, and we are honoured to celebrate her as Patron of Adult Ballet Centre.

“The joy of dance can remain with us for a lifetime.”

If you are in the studios and see Anne Marie, she would love to meet you.
