“Adults are often overlooked, but actually, you’ve got no idea the impact you can have on a person, not just in the ballet studio, but life in general. “I want to really help someone, make them feel seen and looked after, treat them like a professional and that we’re here to do serious dancing. We don’t care who you are, we don’t care how much ballet you’ve done before or what age you are, let’s get it done and really go for it.” Adult Ballet Centre teachers “treat everyone the same” Inclusive, Inspiring, Artistic
Mollie Harrison, Director says one of her favourite elements of ballet is how it encourages goal-setting and the subsequent reward of meeting those goals. “There are benefits across the board for everyone who comes into the studio, and everyone’s coming in for a different reason,” Mollie says.
“Ballet brings continuous progress. There’s always something you can improve and work on and, for me, that’s something I really enjoy about it.
“Because of the mental work it takes in the studio, as well as the physical work you can’t think about anything else in that moment. “You don’t have space to think about how hard your day was at work, or what’s going on in your family, or anything like that. It’s a completely serene space to just be in the moment and work on yourself and be with other people who are working as well.”
Louise began attending classes in December 2023 and she rapidly fell in love. “Ballet was something I always wanted to do when I was a child, but never got the opportunity to try,” she says. “I’m retired now, so I can finally give it ago and I love it. “This place is so welcoming and so inclusive. The teachers are really, really good – they’re patient, helpful, and they’re teaching really good technique but not in a way that’s militant. “You’re able to have fun here, while you’re learning. If someone was on the fence about starting, I would tell them to just do it.

The satisfaction, they earn an emphatic “not bad”, paired with a wide-eyed, slow nod of approval. Dancers come alive under her tutorship, knowing if they push themselves a bit harder, they may be in the running for her queen of all praises: “Hello? Yes! Good!”Ballet is amazing for everybody. It’s an escape for a lot of people,” she says. “It’s not like the gym where you have to pound some music in your ears and try to get yourself motivated. “You can completely forget about your life within the studio itself, and work on something so in-depth. “It’s amazing for the brain, it’s amazing for the posture, your whole body connection – you’re connecting with muscles you’ve never felt before. “It helps a lot of people, even older people with Alzheimer’s, because of the amount of brain work required. “Ballet literally is for everybody.” From London to Melbourne, the wave of dance beginners and veterans reclaiming ballet for their adult selves is growing. They come from different backgrounds, but share common goals: to move their bodies in beautiful ways, feel good in their skin and make friends while doing it.
The Adult Ballet Centre offers classes six days a week at the Arnold St Studio in Cheltenham.

Ballet Supports More Than Movement
Adult ballet engages the body, the mind, and the wider human experience of learning, connection, and expression. Current research suggests that structured dance can support physical function, balance, muscular strength, cognition, and overall well-being across adulthood, including in later life.
Physical Function
Dance interventions have been shown to improve balance, strength, postural control, and aspects of quality of life.
Ballet & Balance
A 2024 classical ballet study in women over 50 found significant improvements in balance and lower-limb strength.
Cognitive Engagement
Structured dance has been found to support several psychological and cognitive outcomes, with evidence also showing a positive effect on global cognition in adults.
Wellbeing & Connection
Dance is often valued for its emotional and social meaning as much as its physical benefits. In Victoria’s 2023 Dance Census, 90% of social dancers identified health and wellbeing as their main motivation.
At Adult Ballet Centre, these qualities are reflected in a training environment where adults are supported to grow with clarity, care, and purpose, connecting to a supportive community.
Adult Ballet Dancer Participation
Adult Ballet Centre is committed to building a lasting standard in adult ballet training. Through structured classical education, clear pathways, and a warm, respectful studio culture, we support adults to train with purpose and grow with confidence.
Our vision is to continue developing ABC as a trusted and enduring home for adult dancers, with the quality, care, and clarity required to contribute meaningfully to this field.
